Xi’an, China – A true example of the harmonious balance of opposites, the Xi’an Yihai Retail Center is where history and present day embrace each other. The historical significance of many of the architectural elements—both on the façade as well as on the interior—date back to traditional “Tang Dynasty” architecture and the local folk arts, creating an overall appearance that alludes to ancient Xi’an. This 440,000 square foot project includes a department store throughout three above-grade stories and one level of below-grade retail, with an exposed glass atrium connecting all levels. In order to take full advantage of the existing site and maximize the commercial value, the design of the building’s floor plan is very simple and open. The fourth story consists of a roof garden attached to a restaurant and bar, which allows the active atmosphere within the building to persist to the top floors. Street level retail mixed with large LED screens adds energy to the exterior and creates an alluring ambiance surrounding the building. |
